Psiphon 3 – A Free VPN and Free SSH Connection Tool
What is Psiphon 3?
Psiphon 3 is a new circumvention tool from Psiphon Inc. that utilizes VPN and HTTP Proxy technology to provide you with the best content access possible. The Psiphon 3 Circumvention System is a relay-based Internet censorship
circumventer. The system consists of a client application, which configures a users computer to direct Internet traffic; and a set of servers, which proxy client traffic to the Internet. As long as a client can connect to a Psiphon server, it can
access Internet services that may be blocked to the user via direct connection. Your Psiphon 3 client will automatically learn about new access points to maximize your chances of bypassing censorship.
How do I get Psiphon 3?
You can email get@psiphon3.com to get the latest version. It doesn’t matter what you put in the subject or body of the message. An automated reply will be sent to you with a link to download Psiphon 3.
Note that Psiphon 3 has automatic updates, so you don’t need to do anything to get new features.
How do I run Psiphon 3?
Download the client program and run it. When you run it, you should see a security prompt showing that this program is a legitimate product of Psiphon Inc.
Psiphon 3 automatically starts connecting when you run it. While it is connecting, a spinning icon is displayed.
When the green icon is displayed, all of your Internet traffic is flowing through Psiphon 3. This green icon shows your connection is “VPN”. This VPN is L2TP VPN type.
Sometimes the VPN protocol is blocked and, after a 20 second connection timeout, Psiphon 3 automatically falls back to offering an HTTP Proxy and SOCKS Proxy over an SSH tunnel. In this mode, not all of your Internet traffic flows through Psiphon 3, just certain applications. Psiphon 3 automatically sets the Windows system proxy settings that are respected by default by all major web browsers.
This green icon shows your connection is “SSH”. Under SSH connection, you may need to config a proxy in your web browser.
Http proxy setting in web browser: 127.0.0.1:8080
SSL proxy setting in web browser: 127.0.0.1:8080
Socks proxy setting in web browser: 127.0.0.1:8080
How to Stop Psiphon 3?
When you close the program, Psiphon 3 automatically disconnects. You can also click on the icon to toggle the connection.
Is It Safe to Use Psiphon 3?
Psiphon 3 is designed to respect user privacy. User statistics are logged in aggregate, but no individual personally identifying information, such as user IP addresses, are retained in PsiphonV log files.
